The club's very successful first show at the new Pikes Peak Library District 21C Library, located at 1175 Chapel Hills Drive.  Set-up on THURSDAY July 16 evening.  (There was no meeting this month in lieu of the show.)

SATURDAY, JULY 11, 2015  
Nursery crawl, starting at Harding's Nursery at 9 am.  We went to nurseries around town looking for Potentilla for our workshop on Aug. 15.

TUESDAY, JUNE 16, 2015  
7 - 9 p.m.  We discussed and showed how to protect trees from the elements; hail and sun.  Planned a nursery crawl for next month where we will go to a local nursery and look for tree material for the upcoming workshops with Potentilla with Todd in September.

7 - 9 p.m.  We discussed soil and getting ready to pot deciduous trees at the end of May and June.

Matt Reel was in Colorado Springs for a workshop from 10:00 am to at least 1:30 pm.  Meeting place was at Firehouse #14.

Tree hunt.  Met at 8:00 am at Steve Alford's House.  We went to the Lake George area, west on highway 24.

7 - 9 p.m.  Pots!!  How to choose the right one.  Different styles, types, advantages and disadvantages of each type.  Making your own pot.  Getting ready for the two upcoming tree sales we will be doing in May.

At this month's meeting we discussed fall/winter storage of your trees, your options for creating a suitable space for protecting your trees through the winter months.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2014  
The club meeting was at Firehouse #14 Community Meeting room.  (Go to the Southeast corner of Academy Blvd. and Dublin Blvd., and turn east onto Dublin.)
10 am to noon.  We did a program on wiring, but very different from wiring classes done in the past.  This one was based on Colin Lewis' video.
And we had artificial bonsai trees to work on.
Also, it was voted on to change our meetings to the THIRD Tuesday of the month, at 7:00 p.m.

A quick summary of the choice of pots was given by David Conlin, followed by a repotting demo of a bougainvillea by Peter and Bill,
and then the potting workshop with twenty-four persons participating.  At the Senior Center.

Turning ordinary houseplants into Bonsai.  The club furnished several plants for members to work on, including Schefflera, Ficus benjamina, and Norfolk Island Pines.
The plants would distributed among the fifteen participants at the end of the meeting.  At the Senior Center.

The club's annual show this year was at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, 30 West Dale Street, a block south of Colorado College on the west side of Cascade Ave.
Set-up was on Friday, Aug. 31.  Actual display with demonstrations, workshops, vendors, and silent auction was on Saturday Sept 1 and Sunday Sept 2.  Free admission.  With the latest version of our handout.

"Visions of the American West," the joint American Bonsai Society / Bonsai Clubs International Convention in Denver.
Headliners included Marc Noelanders (Belgium), Dan Robinson (US), Ryan Neil (US), Qingquan 'Brook' Zhao (China), John Kirby, Young Choe, Chiara Padrini (Italy), Lindsey Bebb (Australia), and Denver's own Harold Sasaki and Larry Jackel.

Rocky Mountain Bonsai Society's Annual Father's Day Bonsai Show at the Denver Botanic Gardens (1007 York Street).

Workshop at the Starsmore Discovery Center, 2120 N. Cheyenne Canon Rd.  10:00 a.m. to approx. noon.  $20 for a 1"+ diameter "Tiger" Ficus or Fukien Tea.  Nineteen members and six other family members and friends were in attendance.
Directions: Head South on I-25 and take the Tejon St/Nevada Ave exit.   At the light turn Right (south) onto Tejon St.  After approx 4 intersections (and just a little ways after the Bristol Brewing Company on your left), you will make a soft Right turn at a 5 spoked intersection onto West Cheyenne Blvd.  Follow this road about 2.5 miles, all the way to the end & the Starsmore Center is located on your Right just past the entrance to Cheyenne Cañon.

Collecting and potluck lunch at Claudia and Jim Eley's in Green Mountain Falls.  Eighteen members and three guests.  Light rain and hail fell at the end of our collecting, so we adjourned for lunch followed by discussion of our June workshop and possible venues for this year's show.

APRIL 7, 2012  
Potting Workshop at the Senior Center.  Following a brief demonstration by Ross Huddleson on how he repotted his large ponderosa pine, "The Wave," the club supplied the soil mix for members to either pot up their junipers from January or another tree.  Twenty members and one guest attended.  See this link for additional information.  Also, a few details about the upcoming collecting season.

Club participation in Spencer's 16th Annual Spring Garden Show, 4720 Center Valley Drive, off of U.S. 85-87 in north Fountain,

Workshop: Wiring and further shaping of our January Rocky Mountain junipers and other trees, at the Senior Center CD Smith Room.  Attendance was 19 persons, including two new members.  We also worked on Bill's 15-gallon 3-man-size "Bacheri" spruce (Picea pungens).


JANUARY 7, 2012  * NEW Standard Date *
Hands-on Workshop: Trimming and shaping a 2' tall 3-gallon size Rocky Mountain juniper (Juniperus scopulorum) from a nursery in Cañon City.  Fifteen plants (out of 19 available) were supplied at $10 each.  At the Senior Center.  Attendance was 26 persons, including a few new members. Repotting will be done at a later date.  Discussion was also done of our new calendar and the June show in Denver.

Club-run demo/workshop at Bill Fox's house.
For a fee, participants could have either a Ligustrum (privet), Sageretia (Chinese sweet plum), or Ulmus (Chinese elm).
The tree was trimmed and in some cases wired by the participants with the aid of more experienced club members.
Five new guests/members were among the participants.  Afterwards, we all enjoyed a hosted/potluck luncheon.

Building flat/low stands for tree display at Dave and Jenna's house in Manitou Springs.
For a modest fee, pre-cut pieces were available for members to construct their own stands.  Power tools were provided.
Refreshments were provided.  We also discussed the upcoming Fall show and provided some basic care and collection information for our newer members.


JULY 17-18, 2010

Our annual show, raffle, silent auction, and sale. 10 am to 9 pm Saturday and 11 am to 5 pm on Sunday in the Citadel Mall, Store #2002.
The show was fantastic and well-received. A demonstration was presented at 1 pm on Saturday by David Conlin and another at 1 pm on Sunday by Ross Huddleson.

Seminar, demonstration, and assistance at Spencer's Lawn & Garden Centers Success Show, 4720 Center Valley Drive, off of U.S. 85-87 in north Fountain, north of the Wal-Mart and right next to the Goodwill store. Lecture/demo by Claudia at 10:30 am on Sunday.

Types of pots and their history were discussed, and rules/guidelines for matching a container to a tree were gone over.  More info about our March 2008 participation at Spencer's Lawn & Garden Centers Success Show in Fountain.  Permits and digs in the forest in May were touched upon.

Because the Senior Center was closed this weekend, our meeting was cancelled at the last minute.

Review of last month's show and ideas for next year's display. We had sweatshirts for sale with the club logo on them.  We discussed winter preparation of trees and worked on several bonsai.

We had an auction of a dozen pots which were donated to the club by the family of a woman who is now in hospice.  These included three pots she made in 1978.  A couple of members also brought in bougainvillea trees which needed and received nice summer haircuts.  Bill Fox related some additional general summer care instructions for our trees.

At Claudia and Jim Eley's home in Green Mountain Falls for meeting, collecting and lunch.  Claudia graciously furnished lunch.

Also, the Denver Bonsai Society's annual show at the Botanical Gardens was the following weekend, June 17 and 18.


MAY 13, 2006
At Cliff Broyle's home in Fountain.  Bill Fox and Robert Baran helped other members prune and pot a Japanese red maple and tropical cherry.  Also, advise was given on the care and shaping of a few junipers, dwarf jade, and ficus.

APRIL 8, 2006
A repotting seminar including information on root pruning.  Several members each brought in a tree and, if necessary, got assistance in repotting it.  Repotting soil/grit was available at a very reasonable price. 

Details were given on how and where to get permits for upcoming collecting trips to the Pike National Forest.

Long-time member Ross Huddleson put a collected Ponderosa pine in a large cascade pot.  The group then helped a couple of members shape the trees they had brought in.

Hands-On Workshop with pre-selected but still rough specimens of San José Junipers or Dwarf Alberta Spruce.  Styling and wiring only.  Good turn-out.  Also, a recap of Craig Coussins' Denver club workshop: extending the aesthetic triangle of a tree's foliage to include the tray, and wiring deciduous bonsai with a bundle of thin wires (starting at the base of the tree and moving up to the smaller branches).
