Dwarf Potted Trees in Kunisada's
Woodblock Prints

Per the source of most of these prints, Horst Graebner, "Like most other ukiyo-e artists, less is known about [Utagawa] Kunisada's life (1786-1865) especially the private aspects, so it's not known whether he or one of his friends grew bonsai.  There is only one exception and it is found in a print which bears the title Baiko jukyo yuki no kei (Baiko's house, scape of snow).  This proves that the actor Onoe Baiko III was growing bonsai."
Despite the numerous examples below, it can't be said that Kunisada was more interested in bonsai than other ukiyo-e artists.  He was the most productive designer of all his contemporaries (between 20,000 and 25,000 designs).  Bonsai seem to have been a most common and usual aspect of Japanese daily life, so it would be normal that you can find examples on prints illustrating the ukiyo, the "floating world."

V-ka8678, c.1821

The Work:     V-ka8678: lefthand triptych: actors in freetime from left Otani Baju, Segawa Kikunojo V, Ichikawa Danjuro VII, Onoe Kumesaburo II, Onoe Densaburo, Onoe Matsusuke III, Onoe Kikugoro III, Ogino Isaburo II, publisher: Maruya Bun'emon (fl. c.1793-1834); dated: c.1821.

The Artist:      Utagawa Kunisada (b. Tsunoda Kunisada, 1786-1864) became a pupil of Toyokuni at age fifteen.  With Kuniyoshi and Hiroshige, Kunisada was the leading Ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo period.  He is said to have produced a larger number of works than any other Ukiyo-e artist.  In 1844 he assumed the name Toyokuni III and afterwards led an atelier of some twenty-eight pupils in producing ever-larger series of actor portraits and prints of beauties, of increasingly technical complexity.   1
